How to Use Baking Soda to Wash Off 90% of All Toxic Pesticides from Your Fruits and Vegetables

Baking soda is one of the most versatile products in our kitchens, and despite its numerous other uses, research has shown that it is one of the most effective ways to eliminate up to 90% of pesticides from fruit and vegetables.

The study conducted at the University of Massachusetts on gala apples whose aim was to analyze its efficacy in cleaning the produce gave amazing results.

The team of researchers applied two of the most common pesticides to the gala apples, thiabendazole, and phosmet. The first one is a fungicide which has been shown to penetrate the peels of apples, while the second is an insecticide.

The apples were washed with three different liquids:  tap water, a one percent baking soda/water solution, and the most commonly used commercial bleach solution, approved by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

The apples soaked in the baking soda solution for two minutes before the pesticides were removed. Yet, the solution needed about 15 minutes to entirely get rid of the pesticides.

Baking soda is an alkaline salt that cleanses the pesticide residue from the skins of produce in a completely harmless and eco-friendly way.

All you have to do is to add a few tablespoons of it to a bowl of water and submerge the fruits and vegetables in the solution for several minutes.

You can also scrub the produce with some baking soda using a brush. This is especially useful in the case of muskmelons since the nooks and crannies in the rinds tend to accumulate dirt and microbes.

While in the kitchen, baking soda can be used in various other ways as well, such as:
  • Clean grease stains on stovetops
  • Clean an automatic coffeemaker
  • Clean cast-iron cookware
  • Bake better beans
  • Fluff your omelets
  • Tenderize meat
  • Remove fish smells
  • Reduce acids in recipes
  • Reduce the taste of vinegar
  • Remove the bad odors from hands
  • Improve the effects of the dishwashing liquid
  • Make your own dishwashing detergent
  • Deodorize the dishwasher
  • Clean the refrigerator
  • Clean the microwave
  • Shine stainless steel fixtures and chrome trim
  • Clean baby bottles and accessories
  • Clean a cutting board
  • Clear a clogged drain
  • Deodorize your garbage pail
  • Eliminate coffee and tea stains from China
  • Clean the thermos
